=========================

========================= "Camp Eigen" at Musicport 2013 ========================= The festival takes place in Whitby, North Yorkshire, from 18th to 20th of October, that is from 6 PM Friday to 7 PM on Sunday. The festival programme has yet to be put together, but when it begins to take shape, I will report back. It's normally a pretty full schedule, so it's unwise for me to book events like workshops or a dinner just yet, to avoid clashing with performances which we'll all want to go to. When I get an idea of numbers, I'll know what scale to cater for and whether we'll all fit in my front room. Traditionally a number of small marquees get erected in the main exhibition hall of the Spa Pavilion. One such marquee will be an official performance venue (but not the only one). Others will have various uses, including exhibitions by vendors and other stallholders. We will have a small marquee to ourselves to hangout in and jam casually. People will be able to c...

How can I make the Pico octave buttons toggle?

How can I make the Pico octave buttons toggle? What I mean is this… When I browse the factory scripts, I see a folder called: "Octave Key Transposition" which contains Belcanto scripts. Take any one of these, eg: Perfect 4th. It reads as follows… ========== description     Remap octave talkers.  Makes the octave up and     down buttons transpose by a Perfect Fourth     instead.     This script should be run with Pico setups only script     octave talker hey 1 called 1 cancel     octave talker hey 2 called 1 cancel     octave talker hey " main keygroup hey octave by 0.416666666666666667 up " when 1 called 1 do     octave talker hey " main keygroup hey octave by 0.416666666666666667 up " when 2 called 1 do ========== [ASIDE: IMO the first "up" should read "down", viz…     octave talker hey " main keygroup hey octave by 0.416666666666666667 down " when 1 called 1 do …and that goes for all the scripts in that folder, which must ha...

Combining Scripts and Talkers

Combining Scripts and Talkers To me, after actual Belcanto (...playing Belcanto) Scripts and Talkers are tremendously powerful!! I'm used to "cook up" a script with all the "ingredients" that I need for example: - what instrument will play (AU1 or Cello or Sampler 4...)  - what scale/tonic/base note - what illuminator mapping - what tempo/beat - what will be on the percussion keys - keyboard layout - and so on and on; tons of things to help sort of pre-program the state of the Alpha/Pico/Tau before you will begin to play! And then, use a talker to run this script... but what IF all this would became "actions of a talker" !!! even nicer!! this way no need of the *.txt file and so this would be part of the setup and could be shared much simpler. Attached is a Pico setup (unzip to the setups locantion and it will create pico-layer 4 setup) with the above more or less included. Keyboard Layouts inside a talker (key 9) similar to the factory scripts Also a ...

Pico Split

Pico Split Ive been having a bit of fun digging around in Workbench, and have created myself a Pico Split mode off of the factory setup. (Basically, so I could have one half of the keyboard with sustain and the other not) Anyway, works nicely... Ive set it up as a 9th instrument (mode + key 2,9) , and then have a talker on mode + 1,9 which enables me to select which instruments i want on each split, where column represents a split, and the row toggles that instruments. All works fine, but have 2 oddities I'm unsure of. a) I had to enabled 1,9 & 2,9 in physical mapping, to allow it to be used as option selector. but now they also play notes, even though they are not in the musical mapping.  any ideas on why? and how i prevent it?  (they seem to be 'automatically' given new courses i think) b) when I added the new keygroups, the octave/scale/tone talkers all stopped working,even on the existing instruments. I tried removing the controller link to the instrument rig but th...

EigenD Keyboard Layout's

EigenD Keyboard Layout's Following Ferdinand Strixner request how did I create "key layout talker scripts" From the Release notes since 2.0.48 experimental: Improved number handling so that lists of numbers can be expressed in Belcanto. Extended the scale manager to allow scales to be expressed as lists of numbers as well as names. The net result of all this is that you can say something like: synth rig scaler hey scale to 0 , 2 , 5 , 4.6 , 12 set main keygroup scale to 0 , 1 , 4 , 6 set So no need for pre-defined "user scales". (this can be part of the script) Configuring just the musical mapping does it (more info http://www.eigenlabs.com/wiki/2.0/Keygroups/ ) Example on the Alpha, the small keygroup 2 of split 2 from setup standard 2 empty join keygroup 2 listen musical clear course 1 key 1 to course 1 key 1 add course 1 key 2 to course 1 key 2 add course 1 key 3 to course 1 key 3 add course 1 key 4 to course 1 key 4 add course 2 key 1 to course 2 key 1 add ....

So far there are only 7 of the 78 us in the map...  It might be helpful for people who want to find an Eigenharper nearby. Just a thought! http://www.musomap.com/

On reflection about the discussion about layouts I had a little epiphany.

On reflection about the discussion about layouts I had a little epiphany. That discussion, which gets visited regularly, is typically motivated by a desire to take sheet music written for piano and play it on an Eigenharp. The thought was that nobody would take that same music and attempt to play it (as written) on a guitar. They would use the same chords but voice them quite differently (either strummed or arpeggiated) and add (or emphasize) the melody notes. The point is that a guitar simply is not a piano. The epiphany is that an Eigenharp isn't a piano either. Now it may be that some piano music works well directly (António Machado 's Bach comes to mind) but the interesting thing is the question: what is Eigenharp music (looking to an answer equivalent to the same question about guitar). In fact, we have been asking this for some time in the form of 'what is different / unique?'. So it is amusing not to perceive the question as identical quickly when it comes up fr...

For the future, Im thinking about a Tau (to overcome note range of the Pico)

For the future, Im thinking about a Tau (to overcome note range of the Pico) Id like to be able to play more classical piano music, which probably needs something like 4-5 octaves and accidentals (i.e. i need chromatic) From the EigenTab it looks like the Tau covers a limited number of octaves (2.5?) when using chromatic scale.   I saw some early posts on the forum about custom mappings to give  greater range - did these work out? and still end up with reasonable fingering for left hand chords?  It seemed to be a trade off of range vs alternate fingers. Also on the pico you can lay your finger across 2 keys for chords, is this possible on the tau for say column 1&2, 2&3 or do you end up hitting the other keys?  (3&4 is fine, as same as on pico) Thanks for thoughts.

Im finding that getting the sustain (damper) from the Pico when using the soundfonts (particular the Piano) requires a pretty big input. Is there anyway to reduce this?  i.e. make it more sensitive, bit like the breath compression on the clarinet? Ive tried playing with damper max, and curve but doesnt seem to help... Im thinking I might need to add a rangers or shaper in WB, but wondered if I was missing something more obvious, or was doing some wrong.

About a year ago, Samplemodelling brought out their own platform (SWAM) as they introduced a new Soprano Sax. They have now upgraded all their sax instruments to the SWAM engine (from Kontakt). This seems to be a great step forward. I've upgraded and found: the 32bit AUs work great with the Eigenharp. You can do as little as just set the breathpipe to output MIDI BC or you can get more elabourate. the 32 bit VSTs do not work (they show a blank UI screen. EigenD (you know this, right) does not support 64bit plugins. It takes a bit of practice to ensure that you play legato only when you want but nothing really challenging. These are sample based but also do modelling so they are more CPU intense that just samples but less than a full model approach. I find them much more realistic than any sample-only sax I've tried but less so that, say, the VL1 PM sax sounds (which benefit from tweaking for the Eigenharp.  http://www.samplemodeling.com/en/products_saxophones.php
